Our Founding Dog and His Friends
Dog Lovers Bookshop was founded in 1993 as a tribute to a dog named Potemkin (1969-1984). A German shorthaired pointer, Po had the highest ideals of any individual we've ever known: to watch him was to see something done well, with flair, with grace, with absolute goodness. He was also very funny, and he adored dachshunds. At DLB we refer to him as our Founding Dog. Our guarantee -- that you, the customer, must be satisfied with merchandise and service -- is based on nothing less than a great dog's example.
Dog Lovers Bookshop is owned by Margot Rosenberg, a lifelong dog enthusiast, and Bern Marcowitz, an adult convert to the love of dogs.
Wirehaired dachshunds ran the business from its inception: Houdini (1989-2002), bon vivant and former show dog, was director of public relations and official shop greeter; Rose (1989-2003), director of research and development and a noted collector of sticks and tennis balls, managed the office.
Ms. Phoebe B. Dackel, our adored staff dog, came to us from Dachshund Rescue in December 2005. A serious-minded and ladylike companion, Phoebe enjoys being read to and has quickly developed a keen nose for a good book. She rarely misses a day in the park, where she pursues advanced squirrel studies, showing no aggression but endless curiosity, which has brought her moments of sublime interaction with some of our more insightful squirrels.
About Our Site and Stock
We specialize in literature on all aspects of the canine race, and offer new, used, out-of-print, and antiquarian books -- from publishers around the world, with special emphasis on university and small presses.
We stock books for adults and children, for the prospective dog owner and the longtime fancier, from breed-specific literature to some utterly eccentric efforts.
Books are organized by species, breed, and topic. Please read About Our Books for additional information on how to use our listings.
Old books, often one-of-a-kind and not easy to restock, are removed from the web site promptly, and are not listed again until we acquire another copy.
Most of our stock is in English, but we have many titles in other languages and plan to add more in the future.
Our special enthusiasms are fiction and art. And we have a passion for illustrated children's books, both fiction and nonfiction, including many in Spanish.
We also carry a choice selection of videotapes.
As our stock changes constantly, so do our web site listings, which are updated weekly.
We do not issue printed catalogs.
If you have books to sell... We buy books and welcome your inquiries.
Our Policies: Shipping, Returns, and Privacy
Shipping fees on orders to U.S. addresses are based on the number of books or other items purchased: $4.00 for the first, an additional $1.50 for the second, another $0.95 for each additional item thereafter. A surcharge may apply on certain large and/or heavy books. We ship via U.S. Postal Service. You may request alternatives (surcharges may apply).
On orders shipped outside the United States, we charge the exact amount the post office charges us. For this reason we urge customers outside the United States to pay by credit card. We ship air parcel post insured. You may request surface shipping or other shipping methods.
We ship most orders within 24 hours. And we confirm shipments by e-mail.
Shipping fees and policies are also outlined on our order form.
Returns are accepted for refund or exchange. We ask that you ship returns to us, insured, within 10 days of receipt. Please enclose a copy of your receipt and any instructions to us. If we've been inept (shipped you the wrong edition, perhaps), we will reimburse shipping costs. Otherwise returns are for merchandise value only. Please note that videotapes, if opened and found defective, may be exchanged only for the same title.
Privacy in all communications and transactions is, in our opinion, not only common courtesy; it is an immutable company policy. We do not share, rent, or sell our mailing lists or any other information about our customers. All customer records are maintained in a secure environment and are accessible only to the owners of Dog Lovers Bookshop.
Two Popular Nonbook Questions Answered
Why are there no pictures on DLB's web site? By design, our site remains a graphics-free zone. We assume that photos of your dogs beautify your monitors, perhaps the dogs themselves are hovering nearby -- and we can't compete with perfection.
We have, however, noted the many kind requests from people all over the world and will eventually post Founding Dog Potemkin's photo on our site. Our thanks to everyone who has asked to see his picture.
What happened to DLB's New York City shop? Our little shop in midtown Manhattan closed April 1, 1998. We miss the daily personal encounters and opportunities to meet the wonderful dogs who so often flopped on the sofa or gathered around the water bowl, but we look forward to other opportunities to meet you and your dogs.
